Our Mission Pillars at Work

 Research Final.png

Last year, with the support of our generous donors, Komen LA County raised $175,000 towards our National Research Program.

We thank our supporters for investing in our mission – to help us do more for research, more for our communities, more for caring for those living with breast cancer – including metastatic breast cancer – and more action to get us to a cure.

Did You Know…

75% of funds raised provides grants to LA County hospitals and community organizations that provide social support services and patient navigation services.

25% of funds raised supports the National Research Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, educational and scientific programs around the world.

Circle of Promise Day

The Circle of Promise Initiative invites you to celebrate the life of Henrietta Lacks on Circle of Promise Day at the L.A. Care Building in Lynwood on August 1, 2019 at 9am.

Who was Henrietta Lacks?

A young mom who was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer.  A sample of her cancer cells retrieved during a biopsy were sent to Dr. George Gey's  tissue lab, her cell were the only cells to multiply in a 24-hour period.

"HeLa" cells, from the first two letters of her first and last names — are used to study the effects of toxins, drugs, hormones and viruses on the growth of cancer cells without experimenting on humans. They have been used to test the effects of radiation and poisons, to study the human genome, to learn more about how viruses work, and played a crucial role in the development of the polio vaccine.
