SPECIAL GREETINGS FROM KOMEN LA
BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT

Marveina Peters Dear Friends,

Two years ago, I humbly accepted the nomination for position as Board Chair President of Komen, Los Angeles County. After my personal struggles to provide support for a loved one, watching helplessly as she fought stage 3 breast cancer, I was determined to become a resource for those families that endure such pain as I had.

While serving on the board I’ve discovered shocking facts that an estimated 150,000 women are currently living with metastatic breast cancer in the United States. One in every eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer and African American women's mortality rate is 40% higher than any other race across the country, but in Los Angeles County it’s a whopping 56.4%. These statistics are not only alarming, but they are heartbreaking.

Komen Los Angeles County is dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique needs of all breast cancers and empowers women to get the support and services they need that could save their lives. However, we can’t stop there.

Komen LA County prides itself on dedicating 75% of net proceeds to the LA County community. The remaining 25% of the net funds raised support Komen’s National Research Program, which is regarded as the most innovative and responsive grant program in breast cancer research.

Your generosity and support throughout this year has enabled Komen LA to provide 9 community grants, a total of 938 mammograms that detected a number of women with breast cancer.

We need your continued support as we come to the close of 2017. We ask that you find it in your hearts to make one final contribution to Susan G. Komen LA County. The holidays are a time to give. What better way, then to give a woman the gift of a mammogram screening.

The following letter from Kimberly Williams, a breast cancer survivor and Komen LA Ambassador, will give you an understanding of the impact of your gift.

You have our deepest appreciation for your continued support,

Marveina Peters Johnson
Chair and President

A NOTE FROM OUR SURVIVOR AND AMBASSADOR

Kimberly Williams v2My name is Kimberly Williams and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at the young age of 29. I was the first woman in my family to be diagnosed, so I knew nothing about the disease or the available resources to me. After hearing about Susan G. Komen LA, I spent some time researching their purpose and I immediately found myself drawn to the cause of “Finding a Cure.” I reached out to the Komen LA team to understand what resources were available to me as a young breast cancer survivor and they connected me with a group that helped me financially as I was going through treatment and taking time off work. I underwent chemo therapy and a bilateral mastectomy. Three years later I was diagnosed for the second time with breast cancer and underwent treatment again. During these difficult times, the Komen Los Angeles team was right there by my side supporting me in any way that they could!

Since then I have become a Susan G. Komen LA Ambassador, educating the community about breast cancer. The Komen Los Angeles team are my family and I can’t express enough how grateful and blessed I feel to be connected with such a wonderful group of people.

Each year Susan G. Komen LA helps hundreds of women through education, screenings, treatment and research. They represent all that is good, wholesome, ethical and moral. They go above and beyond the call of duty and are addressing real problems within our community.

Please, consider giving a gift to Komen LA to support women like me as well all the work Susan G. Komen LA does to benefit breast health and awareness for women and men in Los Angeles County!

Kind regards,

Kimberly Williams
